to do with them, using them
to upgrade from Singapore Air Premium Economy Class
to Business Class with this sale can be a good deal.
Secondly, this sees a significant decrease in the number of
Business Class seats available on the route and that's
not going
to be good for
upgrades or the already pathetic award availability.
And the best part about using miles
to upgrade from Premium Economy
to Business Class, it won't cost you any more money.
Under the old rules, although
not all Economy Class fare codes could be
upgraded, all the fares that were eligible for
upgrades could be
upgraded to Premium Economy AND
Business Class:
On the negative side the aircraft swap will see the route go from having 53 premium cabin seats (16 First Class and 37
Business Class)
to just 30
Business Class seats —
not good news for
upgrades or awards.
With only 4 systemwide
upgrades available per year, from 2017 onwards, buying discount Economy Class fares with the idea of
upgrading them
to Business Class won't work for someone who travels as much as I do — especially if I'm traveling with Joanna — so I need
to come up with a way
to get around this issue.
American Airlines is introducing Premium Economy cabins
to its international fleet from late 2016 and, although we don't know for sure, it's more than likely that systemwide
upgrades will only
upgrade to the next cabin of service — i.e you'll have
to pay for Premium Economy tickets if you want
to upgrade to Business Class.
I don't have
to worry about
upgrades clearing — I'll be flying in
Business Class most of the time anyway.
There will still be some major routes that Singapore Airlines flys that don't have a Premium Economy cabin — like Singapore
to Sydney (SQ241) on a non ER version of the Boeing 777 - 300 — so, on those routes and aircraft, an Economy
to Business Class
upgrade will still be possible.
