However, it is quite possible
to distinguish
between an active and a passive form of the offended consciousness, if we take care
to remember that the passive form is so far active as not
to permit itself wholly
to be annihilated (for offense is always an act, never an event); and that the active form is always so weak that it can not free itself from the
cross to which it is
nailed, or tear the arrow from out its wound.5
