These
purposes are realized in a series
of events that Gabriel Fackre calls the red thread through Scripture - the central and defining
narrative of Scripture, what we might call God's
story of redemption or renewal.
The
narratives of the Bible report those acts for the same
purpose and even prescribe ritual events for the telling and retelling
of the sacred
stories.

narrative is spotty and confusing, however, the show serves its
purpose in that it only relates any kind
of interesting
story or characterization to girls between the ages
of 14 and 18.
With a clear sense
of story and
purpose, the film not only serves as a shot in the arm for independent
narrative cinema, but also as a rallying cry for those determined not to see the US go to the dogs.
Chilean - born Ruiz is a director whose love
of storytelling and
narrative play is often more engaging than the films themselves but with Mysteries
of Lisbon, an epic based on a classic Portuguese novel (one yet untranslated into English), his engagement with the characters and their defining
stories guides his direction, and his graceful camerawork and unerring eye for images both classical (like paintings in a cinematic frame) and fluid (his camera moves with
purpose and grace) are in the service
of the trajectories
of the characters.
There isn't much in the way
of a
narrative story to concern yourself with, but it's refreshing that this kind
of title does at least have a storied
purpose.
