program.
The fears centered on the prospect that the Fox News approach to issues like
climate change would spill across
National Geographic, from the magazine to the TV
programming.
Jessica Tierney, lead scientist on the project and currently a post-doctoral researcher with
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's
Climate and Global
Change program, analyzed core samples from the lake floor to deduce lake surface temperatures over the past 1,500 years.
In reference to Michael Glantz's
program and the funding by the government - controlled
National Science Foundation, the action to terminate the
program smacks of the kind of silencing tactics used by the government on James Hansen of NASA who also spoke out on
climate change.
Though the United States has (at best) sat on its hands and (at worst) actively hindered constructive action to combat
climate change for the past eight years, with the
changing of the guard coming (not soon enough), the next president can jump start action on
climate change by employing the well established Clean Air Act to unify state carbon projects and administer a
national cap - and - trade
program.
We believe that policymakers, the media, and the public should pay attention to scientific expert credibility and the well - vetted comprehensive assessment reports prepared by a large number of the leading scientists — in particular the new IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, along with the
National Academy of Sciences (4 - volume America's
Climate Choices report) and the
National Climate Assessment forthcoming from the U.S. Global
Change Research
Program.
My point in mentioning this is that these types of actions fall somewhere in the long tail of actions to fight
climate change - a
program that can affect a lot of people while falling far short of the headline - generating action on a state or
national level.

So while the
Program adds some new institutions, it also embeds them within a coordinated policy framework of Acre, other states in the region, and the federal government including The Sustainable Amazon Plan, the Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Amazon, the
National Plan of
Climate Change, and The Amazon Fund.
