The difficulty encountered by the ONS in seeking to explain
the national gender pay gap, despite the raft of data it has available to it, highlights the nature of the challenge employers face.
The resulting report «Understanding the gender pay gap in the UK» makes interesting reading for those keen to understand just how far
the national gender pay gap reflects factors that can be explained in gender neutral terms.
Of course this also means that almost 64 % of
the national gender pay gap can not be explained by any of these factors.
This is compared to the UK's
national gender pay gap of 18.1 per cent which is the lowest since records began in 1997.

On a
national scale, leaders such as Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook, and California Senator Kamala Harris are trying to address the issue of
gender inequality, including efforts to close the
pay gap.
Expert Market, a U.K. - based product comparison site, calculated the
pay gap between
genders in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., using wage data from the
National Women's Law Centre.
While Lyft's attempt to raise awareness about the
gender wage
gap echoes similar corporate moves that capitalize on these
national awareness days, the company has recently doubled down on efforts to fix its own
pay parity issues.
Following an election that had one of the largest
gender gaps in history, women are more likely than men to say they are
paying increased attention to politics, according to the latest
national survey by Pew Research Center.
The Office of
National Statistics (ONS) annual salary report showed the
gender pay gap increased from 9.5 % in 2012 to ten per cent in 2013.

National Education Union, said: «The government statistics illustrate the

Matrix Chambers is representing the
National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in a group complaint relating to the BBC's
gender pay gap, as it emerges that former BBC News China editor Carrie Gracie is among at least 10 senior female employees being advised by Mishcon de Reya.
