National Eye Institute (NEI) found that the drug Lucentis (ranibizumab) can be highly effective for treating proliferative diabetic
retinopathy, an eye disease that can occur as a complication of diabetes.
The study involved 52 clinical sites within the Diabetic
Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net), supported by the
National Eye Institute (NEI) and the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the
National Institutes of Health.
The DRCR.net was founded in 2002 through a cooperative agreement with the
National Institutes of Health to form a collaborative network dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research of diabetic
retinopathy, diabetic macular edema and associated conditions.
Maroney, 38, lost his sight in 2002 due to diabetic
retinopathy, the leading cause of vision impairment among working - age adults, according to the
National Eye Institute.
