Saying the proposed
pipelines are all one system, just like the nations rivers or even our arteries, activists from
across the northeast gathered on the east steps of New York's State Capitol to protest the expansion of
natural gas pipelines.
In the January issue of Environmental Science & Technology the researchers described their efforts mapping nearly 5,900
natural gas leaks of varying severity
across 1,500 road miles of Washington, D.C. To learn more about the state of the
gas pipelines running through several major U.S. cities — in particular those serving New York City — Scientific American interviewed Robert Jackson, professor of environmental sciences at Stanford and Duke universities and the study's lead author.
The mega-leak has drawn attention to the broader problem of fugitive emissions from
natural gas production, processing,
pipeline and storage infrastructure
across the country.

natural gas from shale regions

pipeline infrastructure, allows
natural gas to meet the growing demand for clean, affordable electricity.
The company is Virginia's largest carbon polluter and has plans to build a large liquefied
natural gas export facility in Maryland and a huge

But the conclusion of an international agreement to limit Iran's nuclear arms capacity, which would lift the international sanctions that have restricted Iranian energy exports, would give new momentum to the planned construction of an ultra-deepwater
natural -
gas pipeline across the Arabian Sea, from Iran to India's west coast.
For its part, Australian
natural gas major Santos suggests connecting the Northwest Shelf and Moomba to Australia's East Coast by
pipeline across the empty interior.
But the biggest reason is that
natural gas pipelines already have routes laid out for them
across Asia and they can provide the second leg of a tripartite infrastructure that can include electricity power lines.
Santos has suggested building out a
natural gas pipeline from Port Hedland
across the Outback to Moomba.
This could be done by constructing a
natural gas pipeline network
across the sea in coordination with HVDC and fiber optic infrastructure connecting Australia to Southeast Asia via East Timor and Indonesia.
This electricity and
natural gas would then be shipped
across the Timor Sea via bundled high voltage direct current power lines and
natural gas pipelines.
Given that roughly half the investment of infrastructure lies in labor, bundling HVDC,
natural gas pipelines and fiber optics would create deployment savings
across all three.
These incidents include over three - hundred unreported spills from 2012 to 2013, several significant leaks of oil and polluted saltwater into streams and farmland in the six months prior to the latest train derailment (see here and here), a decade - old saltwater spill which is still being cleaned up coupled with a
pipeline rupture discovered in September 2013 which will take another four years to clean, and a
natural -
gas pipeline explosion
across the border in Canada, which impacted
gas availability in several U.S. states during the winter of 2014 (see here and here).
