Several stations in the North Slope of Alaska and the Brooks Range had
record or
near -
record high temperatures in the permafrost at depths of about 65 feet, showing how much the warming is affecting the Arctic environment.
For example, a carbohydrate - rich meal in the evening was found to delay the circadian rhythm of core body
temperature and reduce nocturnal melatonin secretion.30 This is relevant, since sleep propensity and quality are
highest near the declining limb of the core body
temperature curve when melatonin levels are increased.31, 32 Although body
temperature and melatonin were not
recorded in the current study, these effects would be consistent with an increase in SOL on night 5 and the association with nocturnal arousals observed here.

To suggest that because
near surface
temperatures have flattened at or
near the
highest on
record requires «abandoning» a sinking ship is to be grossly underinformed about the full scope and scale of the multiple changes going on and the confidence that anthropogenic climate continues unabated as it will so long as humans continue to increase greenhouse gas concentrations.
By picking one specific area of only one of the spheres (surface
temperatures), while it might be one piece of interesting information and it certainly it is quite true that surface
temperatures have been flat at or
near record high levels, focusing on this fact alone and the fact that climate models failed to have forecast it, does very little overall good if the goal is to educate the public about the bigger picture, i.e. anthropogenic climate change as an energy imbalance affecting the whole Earth energy system, including all the spheres discussed above.
''... worked with two sediment cores they extracted from the seabed of the eastern Norwegian Sea, developing a 1000 - year proxy
temperature record «based on measurements of δ18O in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, a planktonic foraminifer that calcifies at relatively shallow depths within the Atlantic waters of the eastern Norwegian Sea during late summer,» which they compared with the temporal histories of various proxies of concomitant solar activity... This work revealed, as the seven scientists describe it, that «the lowest isotope values (
highest temperatures) of the last millennium are seen ~ 1100 - 1300 A.D., during the Medieval Climate Anomaly, and again after ~ 1950 A.D.» In between these two warm intervals, of course, were the colder
temperatures of the Little Ice Age, when oscillatory thermal minima occurred at the times of the Dalton, Maunder, Sporer and Wolf solar minima, such that the δ18O proxy
record of
near - surface water
temperature was found to be «robustly and
near - synchronously correlated with various proxies of solar variability spanning the last millennium,» with decade - to century - scale
temperature variability of 1 to 2 °C magnitude.»
«The authors write that «the Mediterranean region is one of the world's most vulnerable areas with respect to global warming,»... they thus consider it to be extremely important to determine what impact further
temperature increases might have on the storminess of the region... produced a
high - resolution
record of paleostorm events along the French Mediterranean coast over the past 7000 years... from the sediment bed of Pierre Blanche Lagoon [
near Montpellier, France]... nine French scientists, as they describe it, «
recorded seven periods of increased storm activity at 6300 - 6100, 5650 - 5400, 4400 - 4050, 3650 - 3200, 2800 - 2600, 1950 - 1400, and 400 - 50 cal yr BP,» the latter of which intervals they associate with the Little Ice Age.
Finally, the fact that both the oceans and the atmosphere are at their all time
highest temperatures over the past 10 year average from instrument
record and through extrapolation to
near - term paleodata, we can see a remarkable consistent effect of what increasing greenhouse gases do to overall alterations in Earth's non-tectonic energy storage.
Despite a

In short, even if you don't think warming in the surface
temperature record is exaggerated, there still has not been anywhere
near the amount of warming one would expect for the types of
higher sensitivities in the IPCC and other climate models.
