There was a ton of effort put forth to make
multiplayer happen: we had to actually author third person Samus animations, we had to have
support for multiple «players» in a game world, we
needed to author all new lower quality effects, add game modes, et cetera et cetera.
Given that built - in
multiplayer support is a well - understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn't as much of a
need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.
I'm a strong supporter of not just ramming
multiplayer into games that simply don't
need it or where the gameplay mechanics simply won't
support it, but the way duels here are handled feel like they could have worked well in a competitive online environment.

needed an entire second semester — literally doubling the project's time — to focus on getting online

multiplayer support, you CAN still play one - on - one with a PSN Friend ONLINE provided you both have PlayStation ® Plus and your friend doesn't even
need to own the game!
