In just the first 3 years of the NMUTR program, Montclair has produced 65 teachers for Newark Public Schools in the high -
need areas of math, science, and special education.

They'll use their
math skills to buy stamps, figure out the number
of carpet squares
needed to cover a classroom reading
area, and much more.
There has been a gradual increase over the past decade in the percentage
of districts offering pay incentives for shortage
areas (see Figure 4), but recent evidence (see work by Katharine Strunk with Jason Grissom, Tammy Kolbe, and Dara Zeehandelaar) shows that few districts are truly strategic in matching incentives to staffing
needs, and as a consequence, school systems continue to struggle to fill teaching slots in
math and science.
Even if new teachers have certification, they are frequently not certified in
areas of greatest
need, such as
math, science, and special education.
But the idea is to do the brainstorm and then focus on a few
of the
areas that arise that match the
maths you
need to cover - stages 4 and 5 in the planning process.
Giving the student the ability to adapt his or her
needs around a
maths, science, or language problem enables a more holistic,
needs based paradigm
of learning — one that is starting to be used outside
of classrooms, in
areas such as health and social care, in wellness and mental health.

of their Perkins debt canceled each year for five years until all
of the debt is forgiven.

This work will require different types
of union contracts and compensation that pay more to teachers in shortage
areas like
math and science and disproportionally increase salaries for the early career teachers and principals in high
need schools who are most likely to leave the profession.
This may be for example sports facilities for schools who are undergoing building work or lack outdoor space, academic support for staff in departments with new colleagues or where resource development is
needed, or gaining support from students or teachers in a key
area of the schools choice such as
maths tutoring, language lessons or developing a school orchestra.
Reach to Teach is designed to attract middle and high school students
of color to the teaching profession and in particular, to the high
need areas of teacher training in
math, science, and special education.
The leadership team, consisting
of the principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, reading,
math, gifted, ESL, library and media, and special education specialists, met each week to explore curriculum and instructional issues, discuss and analyze walkthrough data to identify instructional
areas needing improvement, and determine the professional development
needs of staff.
Upon identifying an
area of need around supporting students in making meaning
of math through instructional best practices, an extensive literature review occurred and was focused around understanding the shifts in the Common Core State Standards, identifying the skills and content knowledge
needed to effectively teach mathematics, how students can make meaning
of math, mathematical discourse, novice vs. expert teachers, and how to move teacher practice were reviewed.
BTR graduates tend to teach in BPS for longer periods
of time, and they teach in high -
need areas such as
math, science, special education, and tend to be teachers
of English language learners.

This all points to an increased
need for fluency between
areas of the
maths curriculum, and greater pupil understanding
of how they interlink.
I also discussed the importance
of education schools partnering with local districts to meet school
needs and support innovation — especially in the STEM
areas: science, technology, engineering and
math.
With the adoption
of clear, concise, state - wide guidelines defining both basic education and the state's financial obligation to fund basic education, and increased supplemental spending for special
needs, arts integration, the sciences, technology, engineering,
math, English as a second language, and programs to assist struggling students, we could better address
areas where we are falling short.
Teachers in a few high -
need areas (e.g. special education,
math, and science) are eligible to apply for a waiver
of the residency policy.
More than half
of rural districts and a third
of high -
need districts report not having enough teachers or staff, despite years
of investments in teacher induction and support programs (Legislative Analyst's Office 2016).10 In the long run, the state should continue and expand its current programs to prepare, recruit, and retain high quality
math teachers, particularly in hard - to - staff
areas.
There have long been alternate (shorter) licensing programs to fill
areas of need such as science and
math.
A student who has severe
needs in the
area of reading may do well with
math or they may do well with behavior, so we
need to look at the specific context and the content
of what the intensive
needs are and provide multiple levels
of support across [those
needs].
A special emphasis is placed on providing assistance in the
areas of math and reading; however sites also assist children with specific academic
needs.
We have some evidence that teacher effectiveness differs according to the two
math areas of problem - solving and procedures, but we
need to further understand the contributions
of measurement error to those findings and to extend them to other subjects and skills.

The Special Education Teacher will provide small group and one - on - one instruction to students requiring support in the
areas of reading, writing,
