The image on the right shows a heated strip

The central region of the drop was isotropic, and it was surrounded by the aligned
nematic phase.
However, since the
active nematic used in this work is far from equilibrium, the researchers also found how the internal activity changed and enriched the expectations.
Development of these «stable

The Xoom uses a twisted

(But Angele adds that Nemoptic's displays — which use a material
called nematic liquid crystals — switch color in a hundredth of a second.)
That's thanks to being based on active matrix
bistable nematics, which allows for a 30 millisecond refresh and what looks like fairly decent resolution.
In research reported in the journal Nature Physics, scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Leiden University in The Netherlands have described the results of a combined theoretical and experimental examination of such an active
nematic on the surface of donut - shaped — toroidal — droplets.
Scientists had previously changed the shape of such polymers, known as
nematic elastomers, using heat.
E 69, 041102 (2004)-RSB- that
nematic defects on the curved surface of such droplets will be sensitive to the local curvature.
However, the researchers didn't use actual worms, but an active
nematic composed of flexible filaments covered with microscopic engines that are constantly converting energy into motion.
A collaborative effort among experimentalists and theorists established the
particular nematic nature of the order.
«We used these techniques to observe the pattern formed by beams of particles shot through powder samples of the superconductors under a range of temperatures and other conditions to see if there's a structural change that corresponds to the formation of this special type of
nematic state,» said Ben Frandsen, a graduate student in physics at Columbia and first author on the paper.
In this case, called
nematic order, every space on the checkerboard is white, but the shapes of the spaces are distorted from a square to a rectangle; as you turn round and round on one space, your neighboring space is nearer or farther depending on the direction you are facing.

E Ink will lend the assist with their technical knowledge and help DKE develop e-paper products and DKE will use its STN (
super-twisted nematic)- TFT manufacturing equipment to produce segmented e-paper modules which will be more competitive in price than e-paper modules based on active matrix TFT backplanes.
The 480 × 800 pixel display gives a pixel density of 133dpi, which is actually slightly higher than Apple's iPad 2 (at 131dpi), but the panel used is a basic Twisted

IPS screens provide a much more vibrant image than the twisted -
nematic panels found in most budget monitors.
The screen features a

Helical polyacetylene was synthesized under an asymmetric reaction field consisting of
chiral nematic (N *) liquid crystals (LCs).
The technology is based on active matrix
bistable nematics that brings down refresh rates to just 30 millisecond while also allowing for good quality resolution.A high refresh rate translates to screen getting updated almost instantaneously.

By studying toroidal droplets covered by this

The chiral

During drying, the Sunset Yellow concentration varied within the drop, and microscope images revealed the formation of different fluid phases such as the isotropic liquid (random), liquid crystal
nematic (aligned) and liquid crystal columnar (cylindrically packed) phases that segregate to different regions of the drop.
In this situation, we would say the worms form
a nematic liquid crystal, an ordered phase similar to the materials used in many flat panel displays.
«It expresses how the alignment direction of
the nematic liquid crystal changes as we go around the defect.
However,
the nematic phase formed by the worms is filled with tiny regions where the local alignment is lost — defects in the otherwise aligned material.
In addition, because the worms are constantly moving and changing their configuration,
this nematic phase is active and far from equilibrium.
Among the surprises is that
the nematic droplets created with toroidal shapes become chiral, that is, they adopt a certain twisting direction and break their mirror symmetry.
A toroidal droplet made of

«This is the first time that stable

The experiments proved these new superconductors have the second type of electron density distribution, called

BaFe2As2 is what is called a «
nematic» crystal because its structure goes through a phase transition before it becomes superconducting.
At a sufficiently high level of concentration, the rods are pushed close enough together that they begin to align parallel to one another, forming what is known as a «
nematic» phase.
As the concentration of the drops increases further, however, the liquid crystal evolves from
the nematic phase to the «columnar» phase, in which the rods pack together like bundles of straws.

The best touch - screen desktops use in - plane switching (IPS) rather than generic twisted
nematic (TN) display technology, letting users view the screen from broader angles before seeing a fall - away in image color and clarity.
On the other hand,
Nematic means making use of nematic LCDs that are cheap while being quite sturdy.
Technically the technology can be termed as «Bistable
Nematic (BiNem) Active Matrix e-paper display» where the term «Bistable» refers to the ability of the display to keep showing an image even with the power switched off.
Popular panel types used in desktop displays are Twisted
Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA), Super PVA (S - PVA), Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA), and In - Plane Switching (IPS).
