The SNA is also asking USDA to extend the comment period on

New Guidelines for Snacks in Schools HUMAN Healthy Vending is proud to see that the USDA has released its long - awaited proposal to improve
competitive foods sold in schools.
Among the modifications advocated by the SNA are: removing the
new requirement that students take a fruit or vegetable with their meal; changes to the whole grain requirements; and extending the comment period for the interim final
competitive food (school snack) regulations that are to go into effect this summer.
The Abbey Group is large enough to be able to buy large quantities of
food at
competitive prices and distribute it to various schools — and is already sourcing 30 percent of its
food regionally, from Vermont and
New Hampshire; the percentage goes up to 40, Hansen said, if milk is included.
The company believes that the USDA's
new «Smart Snacks in School» rule, which is the first change to
competitive food guidelines in more than 30 years, will lead to significant improvements in student health, happiness and overall performance — both in the classroom and on the athletic field.
In issuing these standards for
competitive foods, Massachusetts may be trying to get a jump on
new federal rules for
competitive foods which are supposed to be issued this December, a requirement of last year's passage of the Healthy, Hunger - Free Kids Act.
Last week the Massachusetts Public Health Council made news by promulgating, at the direction of the state's Governor,
new statewide guidelines for
competitive foods sold in schools.
My fear is that once the
new federal
competitive food rules are in place across the board, we're going to see major manufacturers of processed
foods simply rejigger their formulas to meet the
new nutritional requirements.
Rather, in response to the
new federal Smart Snacks rules governing
competitive foods and beverages (the snacks and drinks sold to kids during the school day, not the treats given to them in classrooms), our state repealed its own (and far less nutritionally stringent) rules which had been in place since 2004.
With so many of the
competitive foods and beverages allowed in schools even under the
new nutrition guidelines simply being reformulated junk
foods, we have grave concerns about endorsing the marketing of these
foods.
The good news is,
new federal guidelines (to be released for comment later this year) will improve nutritional standards for
competitive foods nationwide.
As many of you know, the
new USDA «
competitive food» rules are due to be released before the end of this year (though likely after the presidential election.)
