At the edge of this
new frontier, Wilson's professor and mentor at the University of California, Berkeley, Ernest O. Lawrence, invented the first crude
cyclotron from shards of glass, wires and wax.
After running
cyclotron day and night for a month, Patin and company produced four atoms each of the
new elements, enough to study how they decay.
