Much of this progress comes from the world's two biggest
car markets — the United States and China — which
accounted for more than half of all
new electric car registrations around the world in 2015, according to the analysis by the World Energy Investment 2016 report.
Last year
electric cars accounted for just 0.14 percent of
new cars sold in 2011, due largely to limited production but also to low consumer demand.
Yet 12 years later, Americans are still buying gas guzzling trucks and SUVs, while hybrid and
electric vehicles
account for just 3 % of
new car sales.
