Supercomputer scientists who were watching the release of the Obama Administration's budget closely to see if contained
new pots of money for
exascale science came away both pleased and disappointed.
Unique among codes used in other
exascale computing projects, it can run on all current and prototype architectures, from the basic X86 chip used in most home PCs, to graphics processing units, to the
newest Knights Landing chip found in Theta, the ALCF's latest supercomputing system.
The PPPL - led code was one of only three codes out of more than 30 science and engineering programs selected to participate in Early Science programs on all three
new supercomputers, which will serve as forerunners for even more powerful
exascale machines that are to begin operating in the United States in the early 2020s.
