As part of the Deep Reef Observation Project (DROP), initiated by the Smithsonian Institution,
a new goby fish species was discovered in the southern Caribbean.
Last year, Drs Ross Robertson and Carole Baldwin had
another new goby published in ZooKeys.
The new goby also has a disproportionately large head and multiple rows of recurved canine teeth in each jaw.

new species, Caecieleotris morrisi, is a sleeper

In last summer's survey, the team collected 30 000 specimens and discovered 40

goby that live in rivers heated by water from hot springs.
Southern tidewater
goby has only been found in three lagoons in San Diego County, making this
new species critically endangered, and the researchers call for conservation actions to prevent possible extinction as the habitat is threatened by California's drought.

Based on differences in mitochondrial DNA and morphological differences, the researchers found that the Southern tidewater
goby is a
new species they've named Eucyclogobius kristinae.
That includes San Francisco Bay, where the majority of inhabitants are alien species such as Chinese mitten crabs,
New Zealand sea slugs and Japanese
gobies — all brought by ballast water.
According to the Nintendo Versus Twitter account, the
