new intensity
of life, marked by love, loyalty, courage and
joy, all for the sake
of the Master, who had sacrificed his
life for them and for the larger good he saw through them.
I'll merely suggest the obvious: The future
of the Catholic faith belongs to those who create it with their fidelity, their self - sacrifice, their commitment to bringing
new life into the world and raising their children in truth, and their determination to walk Christ's «narrow way» with
joy.
And if baptism symbolizes our spiritual identification with Christ in his death and resurrection, I suppose you're right in seeing it as a celebration — because
of the
joy of new life in Christ Jesus.
Their confidence in his continued
life turned their dismay at Calvary into triumph, and without it some
of the most characteristic elements in the
New Testament — the radiant hope and
joy of the whole Book, the Christ - mysticism
of Paul, the shining reality
of the eternal world in the Epistle to the Hebrews, and the enthusiastic acceptance
of sacrificial hardship exhibited by the early church — are inexplicable.
What isn't
new is the call for Christians to
live lives of peace, love,
joy, freedom, generosity, kindness, and prayer.

of the Spirit isn't coercion or fear, but rather love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self - control.
This reconciliation is salvation, and it has all the worth which the
New Testament and the classics
of Christian devotion are constantly ascribing to it:
life abundant,
joy unspeakable and full
of glory, peace that passes all understanding, confidence and hope like an anchor firmly fixed.
