We'd hear a lot of urgent talk in Washington when oil prices went up, then we'd see politicians rush to the local gas stations --- I remember going to gas stations — holding press conferences, announcing new legislation.
From Ohio through Pennsylvania and New York, there's been a building push to fight gas drilling by taking control of energy extraction at the local level through home rule.
The new plan is more restrictive than the 2009 environmental report on oil and gas drilling, which was written before fracking became a prime target of local environmental groups.
The problem in New England, which has resulted in electricity prices that are four times higher than normal for sustained periods, is that all of the pipeline transmission capacity has been purchased by the local gas distribution companies that sell gas for home heating and retail uses.
Carbon pricing continues to reveal itself as an effective, efficient means to lower emissions; new data shows that UK's carbon price has greatly reduced local coal consumption, and may result in decreasing fracked gas use too.
Local governments in California and New York City have sued oil and gas giants.
The newly proposed rules would, among other actions, prohibit venting (intentional emitting), require quarterly leak inspections of new and existing facilities, and include measures to prevent worsening local air quality caused by oil and gas activity.
The CPUC storage decision, which guides SCE and SDG&E to purchase a combined 745 MW of storage, can help ensure that a smart combination of energy storage and local clean energy can cost - effectively eliminate the need for new natural gas plants.
Indeed, as I argue in this article, I think it will be absolutely essential that we shift much of our current wasteful fossil fuel use (e.g., shipping the same goods back and forth across the ocean, driving gas - powered private automobiles, and producing disposable consumer goods) toward building new infrastructure for long - term resilience (e.g., local food economies, low - energy housing, greenspace, water catchment and storage, clean energy systems, trains, and, yes, wind - powered sea vessels!).
The new rules require oil and gas companies to check local seismic data from the U.S. Geological Survey before opening a new waste disposal well.
Stop and ban all new oil, coal and gas projects by passing local resolutions and building community resistance.
Reduce dependency on (imported) fossil fuels (balance of payments, reliance on potentially unfriendly or unstable nations as suppliers, high cost at the pump, all problems as seen from US viewpoint): — encourage nuclear power generation (cut red tape)-- encourage energy savings and improved efficiency projects (tax breaks)-- encourage basic research into new (non fossil fuel) resources (subsidies)-- encourage imports from friendly neighbor, Canada (Keystone pipeline)-- encourage local oil and gas exploration («drill, baby, drill»)-- encourage «clean coal» projects (tax incentives)-- set goal to become energy independent within ten years
Deforestation, the growth of forests, and other changes in land cover could produce local temperature changes comparable to those caused by greenhouse gases according to new simulations from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).
Without these regulations in place, the hue and cry for unlimited new investment in natural gas threatens the continued growth of local resources and local clean energy technologies.
It would be very interesting to follow closely contract attributions both off and on campuses and how much a discount may be offered to Universities new buildings in relation with the number of municipal contracts linked to «climate change» mitigation... Local newspapers that are surviving mostly on real estates ads are very much willing propagandists of the worst kind: http://www.nsnews.com/north-vancouver-city-plans-for-climate-change-floods-1.668838 «Although the city approved an ongoing strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 2005, the focus is now on dealing with existing climate change, said Caroline Jackson, section manager of environmental sustainability at the City of North Vancouver.»
New storage projects are in the news all over, including a 10 - MW battery coupled to a Southern California Edison gas turbine; a multi-kilowatt flywheel that will store four hours of power for Hawaiian Electric; and a proposed 393 - MW pumped hydro project in southern Oregon's Klamath basin that faces opposition from local tribes.
«The Clean Power Plan, by providing such a framework, would enhance ongoing local efforts and enable new local initiatives to improve public health, increase air quality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy innovation.»
Local actors were paid to appear at New Orleans city council meetings to show support for a gas - fired power plant, according to a new repoNew Orleans city council meetings to show support for a gas - fired power plant, according to a new reponew report.
The Halfmoon Community Solar Project will feed solar energy to the grid operated by New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) and will allow more than 100 residential customers in NYSEG's Capital Region territory (parts of Columbia, Essex, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington counties), including low - income residents, to participate in local clean power generation and save money on their electricity bills.
... Local investments in energy infrastructure could create thousands of additional jobs throughout New York while helping to deliver affordable, reliable, clean - burning natural gas to consumers.»
No evidence exists that New England local gas distribution companies engaged in practices to withhold natural gas pipeline capacity on the Algonquin system to drive up gas or power prices in the region, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff revealed.
Another highlight of 2011 was the C40 Cities Mayors Summit in Sao Paulo, where C40 announced new partnerships with the World Bank and ICLEI — Local Governments for Sustainability — to accelerate climate action in cities through streamlined financing, greenhouse gas accounting and uniform reporting.
