When revolutionary French artist Marcel Duchamp (1887 - 1968) debuted his transgressive 1912 Cubo - Futurist painting «Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2» at the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art (now known as The Armory Show) in New York, its reputation preceded it.

In a new painting by Borna Sammak, Pool Party (2018), executed in heat - press vinyl and embroidery, the dignity of the nude comically evaporates: an undressed man urinates before a backdrop of cut - out scenery.

In his new series, Kauper takes on one of the greatest artistic traditions, the painting of the female nude.

Here, three new large - scale oil paintings from the series Mother (2017 — 2018) are presented in conjunction with a painted steel sculpture of a female nude.

A lion with a blue - plumed pirate hat, an obsidian nude with her face blacked out, a mysterious rider on horseback — the settings and characters in Peter Doig's newest paintings, now on view at Michael Werner Gallery, are at once strange and somehow totally familiar, like scenes from myths or dreams.

Angela Fraleigh's newest work reconsiders the classic female nude by taking figures from Baroque and Rococo paintings and reexamining their surroundings, attire and gaze.

The introduction of new types of art, for instance - such as Performance, Happenings and Installations - along with new subject - matter - including things like dead sharks, dying flies, huge ice - sculptures, crowds of nude bodies, buildings that appear to be in motion, a collection of 35,000 terracotta figures, islands wrapped in pink polypropylene fabric, painted bodies, spooky projected imagery on public buildings, and so on - have provided spectators with a range of new (sometimes shocking) experiences.

While the earlier, gritty output would inspire later photographers such as Don McCullin, the new work — nudes, portraits, landscapes — made him an ingredient as essential to the establishment of British modernism as the sculptures of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and the paintings of Ben Nicholson.

But there's also Modern art at TEFAF — Alexej von Jawlensky's colorful 1913 canvasHead of a Woman, painted in a colorful expressionistic style, was on offer for $ 3.4 million at Galerie Thomas, from Munich; Surrealist Paul Delvaux's erotic rendition of female nudes in a dreamlike setting is at Salzburg's Thomas Salis Art & Design; Piet Mondrian's landscape painting of a house surrounded by trees from 1902, before the Dutch modernist discovered his signature style of geometric abstraction, is at Düsseldorf «s Beck & Eggeling; and Impressionist painter Pierre - Auguste Renoir's enchanting 1885 canvas Au Bord de L'eau (At the Water's Edge), which beautifully captures a woman rowing a boat on a rural lake, is priced at $ 12 million at Dickinson, of London and New York.

In these new paintings, his subjects include nudes, palm trees, a window, a man on a lawn, unidentified portraits, and the artist's studio.

Her work has been included in exhibitions worldwide including Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection, Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997, traveled to Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York 1998 - 99); The Nude In 20th Century Art, Kunsthalle Emden, Germany (2002, travelled to Arken Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen in 2003); Painting, Museo Correr, 50th Biennale di Venezia (2003); and Paint Made Flesh, Frist Center for the Arts, Nashville (2009, travelled to the Philips Collections, Washington D.C. and Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY in 2010).
