zones on a number of occasions — basically that they're expanding because of human activity, fertilizer run - off, other factors — but
new research indicates that we may be writing about them even more.
And while the general narrative has stayed the same — large nutrient inputs derived from fertilizer and pesticide run - off turn once vibrant ecosystems into barren, lifeless deserts — some
new science suggests climate change will play a role in exacerbating an already dire situation, expanding the volume of dead
zones in tropical
oceans by up to 50 percent over the coming century.

new study, detailed in the April 27 issue of the journal Science, finds that not all of this carbon makes it past the region of the
ocean known as the mesopelagic or «the twilight
