Each group in the exhibition achieves this through their own distinct technique: the Abstract Classicists of Los Angeles worked in
oil; the Washington Color School stained
acrylic into their unprimed canvases;
and the
New York Op artists built up their
acrylic on primed canvases.
Frankenthaler, who began her career as a second - generation Abstract Expressionist, consistently pushed the boundaries of what painting could be by embracing
new materials
and techniques, abandoning the gestural drawing of earlier work as she transitioned from

For this show, the Bristol - based artist created a whole
new body of work using
oil for the first time, along with
acrylic and spray paint.
Although executed in
New York, the work in the exhibition, which includes
oil and acrylic paintings as well as a series of prints, addresses issues beyond the borders of time
and place, taking up the cultural eruptions of the recent past.
The 17
new paintings are mixed media (
acrylic and oil paint, gouache, marble dust, pencil, spray paint
and synthetic resin) on wood or canvas.
The exhibition includes eight
oil and acrylics on canvas completed during 2014
and 2015 in the artist's
