The show's
oil -

canvas paintings from the late 1940s and 1950s demonstrate the wide reach of the
New York School — works by Jack Jefferson, Deborah Remington, Ward Jackson, Louis Ribak, Lilly Fenichel, and Bea Mandelman — reprised here by the recent mythic narratives (2013) of Eugene Newmann.
Since the band split in the mid-1980s, Simonon has focused
on oil on canvas paintings inspired by 20th century realism and its documentation of the living conditions of the working classes, in particular the work of the American Ashcan School in turn of the century
New York, and the «Kitchen Sink» school of painters of 1950s post-War Britain.

Considering that Velázquez is widely seen as the greatest painter ever to lay
oil on canvas, and considering that he only made about 110
paintings in his lifetime, the fact that a
new portrait is visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art this month (April 16 - July 14) is bound to cause a stir.
These works were difficult to categorize: though I thought of myself as a painter, as I had earlier when working with gouache
on paper, in defiance of the rules left over from Greenbergian formalism in the
New York School that made
oil or acrylic
on canvas the probative medium, these were not
paintings.
Included alongside Hirst's work were a large series of Dominic Denis's
oil on canvas paintings, «Directions» (1990), and a
new series of Angus Fairhurst photographic works layered with gel.
