Betty Tompkins Paintings and Works on Paper 1972 - 2013 Through January 25, 2014 Gavlak Gallery is pleased to present our first solo exhibition with New York based painter Betty Tompkins.

Rose Wylie will be presenting an entirely new body of paintings and related works on paper in Berlin.

In the 1940s and 1950s the main groups within the Abstract expressionism were the «Gesture Painters» and the «Color - Field Painters», who experimented with new techniques for applying paint: dripping, pouring, throwing, squirting, squeegeeing, and spattering, and with the use of unconventional tools, such as wall paper brushes, sticks, and trowels.

The Hessel Collection is international in scope, with paintings, photographs, and works on paper, sculptures, videos and video installations from the 1960s to the present including notable representations from many of the foremost movements in contemporary art; Minimalism, Arte Povera, Transavantgarde, Neo-expressionism, Pattern and Decoration, The Hairy Who and Chicago Imagists, Post-minimalists, and New Media, among others.

In the biggest, most dizzying painting, she lays foundation with meandering blue, flat and sliced like the remains of a cut - paper project, and inundates it with drips, swipes, and scrawls, each section offering a new tension.

The exhibition features new paintings from a few series — Spatial Dialogues, Quantum Wall, and Portals — and new works on paper.

This mid-career survey explores Jones's 15 - year career and features paintings, works on paper and sculpture, along with a new series of Acoustic painting and a site - specific installation created especially for the exhibition.

The 13 featured artists were each asked to contribute new paintings and drawings; for some artists, the pieces they've contributed are interrelated (works on paper are predecessors to paintings on canvas), while for others the two mediums represent distinct practices.

Eisenman's two dozen drawings and three new paintings, all done outdoors, are created with ink, watercolor or pencil on a variety of papers.

She has exhibited extensively internationally including Paintings on Paper at David Zwirner, New York in 2014 and in the 2014 Whitney Biennial.
