One of the many pleasures of
Dog Days, Jon Katz's latest collection of «dispatches» about life on his 110 - acre farm an hour
or so north of Albany,
New York, is witnessing a
person in the process of opening up at a time in life when
others tend to start closing down.
Many of these
people operate «'' puppy mills»»
or other undesirable breeding situations, unsanitary and often inhumane, and if your
new dog or puppy becomes ill, the «bargain» price you paid will seem like anything but.
According to a recent report by PDSA *, 66 % of
dogs show signs of anxiety
or fearfulness — with triggers including
other dogs and
people, being left alone, loud noises,
new situations, fireworks and travel.
You can start your puppy out in puppy kindergarden and the absoulte best things you can do is to have your
dog up to date with all vaccinations, spay
or neuter your pet, and socialize your
new puppy a lot so they learn to be gentle to
other people and pets.
Meeting
other people and
other dogs outside the home allows the
dog to be exposed to
new experiences and stimuli, thus usually avoiding any risks of fear (which in turn could become severe anxiety and /
or aggression).
She's never compulsive, but sits and observes in
new situations,
or say, meeting

Through my more than 30 years of professional training as well as my practical experience rehabilitating foster
dogs, I have considerable working knowledge of teaching basic manners and such problem behaviors as shyness, fearfulness, sensitivity to

people, aggressive behaviors, food and object guarding, out - of - control rambunctiousness, acting - up when seeing
other dogs, and the difficult age of adolescence, whether it be at around 6 months
or 2 - 3 years of age.

or luggage in a
dog's environment, the departure of a resident from a
dog's home, a
new person moving into the home, and conflict between a
dog and
people or other animals in the home.
None of the
dogs available for adoption at ACC have previously displayed aggressive behavior
or caused injury to a
person or other animal, but we recognize that a stigma exists around strong, well - muscled
dogs and a guardian must be prepared to manage this, as well as appropriately train, exercise, and care for their
new pet.
Let us know if your pet has any problems with storms, meeting
new people or dogs, destroying your home, not using the litter box,
or any
other behavior problem.
Other than those who will adopt from a shelter as a matter of course (those saved above), how many
people in the U.S. are looking to bring a
new dog or cat into their home next year but have not decided where they will get the animal and can be influenced to adopt from a shelter?
