Scientists discovered
a new retrovirus «fossil» found in the common vampire bat which is homologous to retroviruses in rodents and primates.
New retroviruses — such as HIV, which jumped from chimpanzees to humans in the early 1900s — infect our species fairly often.

Other indications of evolution are too numerous to actually list in full, but a few might be the clear genetic distinction between Neanderthals and modern man; the overlapping features of hominid and pre-hominid fossil forms; the progressive order of the fossil record (that is, first fish, then amphibians, then reptiles, then mammals, then birds; contradicting the Genesis order and all flood models); the phylogenetic relationships between extant and extinct species (including distributions of parasitic genetic elements like Endogenous
Retroviruses); the real time observations of speciation in the lab and in the wild; the real time observations of novel functionality in the lab and wild (both genetic, Lenski's E. coli, and organsimal, the Pod Mrcaru lizards); the observation of convergent evolution defeating arguments of common component creationism (
new world v. old world vultures for instance); and... well... I guess you get the picture.
Before Katlyn showed up at NIH, the doctors there were already well prepared: They had inserted healthy human ADA genes into a modified mouse
retrovirus — a type of virus that can enter human cells and transfer
new genetic material right into the DNA strands in their nuclei.

new findings to modify
retroviruses so that they can be safely integrated into the human genome.
Probably the most surprising aspect of what Mikovits said that day, however, had to do with the fact that the
new virus appeared to be in the murine leukemia family, which belonged to the larger
retrovirus genus known as gammaretroviruses.
The ability of these children to maintain an intact immune system in the face of ongoing viral replication and in the absence of antiretroviral therapy can provide us with
new insights into hitherto unknown defense mechanisms, which could eventually benefit other HIV patients,» says Professor Oliver T. Keppler, Chair of Virology at the Pettenkofer Institute, and former head of the German Reference Center for
Retroviruses in Frankfurt am Main.
Vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) samples from Mexico and from the Berlin Zoological Garden revealed a
new endogenous
retrovirus (named DrERV after Desmodus rotundus endogenous
retrovirus) that is also present in rodents and primates but is absent in other closely related bat species.
This study represents the only research done so far on endogenous
retroviruses of
New World bats and suggests there is still much to be learned about vampire bats as viral reservoirs.
Her
new genetic analysis studied a few hundred fecal samples collected from Gombe chimps, many of which were infected with SIVcpz, a
retrovirus that is HIV's predecessor.
Endogenous
retroviruses, or ERVs, are not able to produce
new viruses, and because of that scientists originally assumed that they were harmless genetic fossils.
Hervé Perron, then a graduate student at Grenoble University in France, dropped his Ph.D. project in 1987 to pursue something more challenging and controversial: He wanted to learn if
new ideas about
retroviruses — a type of virus that converts RNA into DNA — could be relevant to multiple sclerosis.
A
new study published online by Science links chronic fatigue syndrome to a possibly contagious rodent
retrovirus, XMRV, which has also been implicated in an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
As if chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) hasn't caused enough brawls, a
new study published online by Science links the disease to a possibly contagious rodent
retrovirus, XMRV, which has also been implicated in an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

retroviruses for her doctoral thesis and received her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from The Roswell Park Division, State University of
New York at Buffalo, NY.
With this
new context in mind, researchers can look back at
retroviruses through a deeper lens.
Additionally, the originally generated iPS cells contained DNA randomly inserted into the genome from the
retrovirus system, although researchers have since made
new forms of iPS cells using non-integrating systems and have also improved delivery of the reprogramming factors to the cells.
However, there is still much work to be done to prove that the cells are safe particularly since even this
newer method still uses
retroviruses to tranfer the reprogramming factors.»
In the
new study, a team led by Harvard University's George Church — one of the pioneers of the CRISPR technique — used gene editing to remove all the copies of porcine endogenous
retroviruses (or PERVs) from their pig cells» DNA.

retrovirus DNA is copied into every
new cell.
A recent study by Lombardi et al. [1] describing a gamma -
retrovirus infection in 68 of 101 chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients was notable not only for its claim of a
new viral aetiology of a hitherto controversial disease, but also for the fact that proviral DNA could be amplified from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of 3.75 % (8/218) of the healthy controls.

As for myself, I will pick up articles in prebiotic chemistry, virology as it relates to
retroviruses or bacterial viruses, or molecular biology, such as those dealing with
new discoveries related to promoters, transcription factors (proteins and RNAs which regulate the expression of other proteins and RNAs by binding to promoters), but even after having read a fair amount, trying to fit together pieces in a puzzle, I will be lucky if I have actually understood more than half of a given article at a relatively basic level.
