The Salt Lake City School District's four high schools received Ds or Fs Tuesday from the state's
new school grading system — with West High's F grade in particular drawing debate.
Gov. Gary Herbert said Wednesday he is negotiating with Senate President Wayne Niederhauser on legislation that would add more detail to the state's controversial
new school grading system.
The Senate wants to require local school districts to come up with improvement plans for schools that receive Ds or Fs under the state's
new school grading system — but they offer no funds in order to help local schools implement the plans.
Lawmakers admit
the new school grading system needs tweaking.
In addition, the state Board of Education this week approved
a new school grading system that will nearly triple the number of failing schools.
(Longtime education wonks may remember a similar situation in New York City from the early days of the Bloomberg / Klein era, when their brand -
new school grading system labeled some of Gotham's most sought - after schools as failures.

For a long time, I've dreamed of creating something different within our publicly funded
school system, and I've recently been given the opportunity to realize these dreams by designing a
new arts - based initiative for seventh - and eighth -
grade students in an elementary
school near Toronto.

system under which only 30 percent of a
school or district's
grade will be based on student achievement.

The recent news that 97 percent of
New York City public
schools got an A or B under the district's

The Telegraph has reported that the
new GCSE's, which
grade pupils on a 9 -1
system opposed to the traditional A * - G, will make it more difficult for
schools to reach national benchmarks, with more than half expected to fall short.
