There seems to be an inherent wisdom in this approach, because although I know of some women who have practiced intermittent fasting while breastfeeding (under the supervision of their doctor), I personally needed to eat during late
night nursing sessions in order to feel my best.

A very comfortable chair to have
in the nursery for all those prolonged comforting and rocking
sessions and the late
night nursing ones!

night wakings and
nursing sessions as indicators of «normal mammalian physiological sleep patterns.»
We limit
nursing session, I try to distract, and
in the middle of the
night, I sometimes just let him fuss it out next to me.
In fact, healthy babies can go from many
night nursing sessions, to none, and back to
night nursing a few times during that first year.
I dozed through pumping
sessions in the middle of the
night, and I figured out I could do other things while I
nursed and pumped during the day.
But now that my daughter is eating more solids, waking up for only one
night feed, and
nursing for shorter and shorter periods than her marathon
nursing sessions of infancy, I have noticed a drop
in my milk production.
I try to limit her to one morning, one noon, and one
night nursing session with a few times
in between if she is
in need of some calming mommy time.
My
nursing bra was so comfortable, I would sleep
in it with a
nursing pad (see next item on list) so that I wouldn't leak all over my pajamas at
night between feedings or pumping
sessions.
Some
nights she'll
nurse there and then roll over and go back to sleep, but more often recently she wants to
nurse for hours at a time, so I'm thinking about trying to keep that
session in her bed and not bring her back to ours until she wakes up closer to 5 or 6.
You will likely find it a great help during those sleepless last trimester
nights, during marathon
nursing sessions, for colicky dinner times and eventually to rest
in while you nervously watch the door for when your teen is late
in returning home from the movies.
These
sessions need not be uniformly spaced, however you ought to be
nursing or pumping at least once at
night in the beginning for a couple of months or at any time you feel a decrease
in supply.
It took up a fair bit of room
in our queen - sized bed, but even once my husband returned we kept using it; most
nights, she'd sleep
in the nest from 10 - 4 (with at least one
nursing session, sometimes more) and then I'd lie her on my chest with pillows all around me from 4 - 7, it was the best sleep either of us got!
It is never far from my
nursing spot and even
in the middle of the
night I find myself grabbing it to record at least the time of my son's
nursing session and diaper change as we establish our breastfeeding relationship.
• You may even want to keep some food near the bed for middle of the
night nursing sessions; so you may want to pick something that's less crumbly for eating
in bed.
But as a general rule, I start with «replacing» one
nursing session a day with bone broth (usually at
night in hopes to get them extra full to sleep longer)... and work my way up until they are getting bone broth a few times a day.
