Tittel's team started by channelling one photon of an entangled pair into a crystal of
lithium niobate doped with ions of thulium.
Investigation on reversed domain structures in lithium
niobate crystals patterned by interference lithography S. Grilli, P. Ferraro, S. De Nicola, A. Finizio, G. Pierattini, P. De Natale, and M. Chiarini Optics Express 11, 392 - 405 (2003).
These
strontium niobate compounds show promise for developing advanced electronics because of their «quasi-one-dimensional» metallic conductivity.
Yuichi Ikuhara of Tohoku University's Advanced Institute for Materials Research with Johannes Georg Bednorz of Zürich Research Laboratory and colleagues used atom - resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with theoretical calculations to learn how adding oxygen atoms to strontium
niobates affects their conductivity.
The jewel in each stud is a pale green man - made crystal — potassium lithium
tantalate niobate — concocted by Agranat, a 48 - year - old Israeli physicist.
Using that approach, Cleland and Kevin Satzinger, a UCSB graduate student, fashioned a resonator on a lithium
niobate chip that rang for up to 150 nanoseconds.
Liquid micro-lens array activated by selective electrowetting on lithium
niobate substrates S. Grilli, L. Miccio, V. Vespini, A. Finizio, S. De Nicola, and P. Ferraro Optics Express 16, 8084 - 8093 (2008)
The only woman with a deep and
niobate souls can sit on the throne beside me!
First they doped a lithium
niobate crystal with traces of iron and manganese, which created traps for the electrons by adding a new set of energy levels.
The magic happens on the surface of a special crystal called lithium
niobate (LiNbO3), which boasts excellent optical properties.
Since some crystals, like lithium
niobate, shuffle around their electrons in response to different intensities of light, an interference pattern can be branded onto a crystal.
The team determined that local electrical conductivity within the material directly depended on the shapes of
the niobate octahedra in the layers.
When positive ions of niobium were displaced toward the centers of
the niobate octahedra, a local conducting nature was induced.
But the materials that current devices are made from, such as lithium
niobate, are too expensive to replace the cheap copper wires that connect most computers in home and office networks.
The new process, which the researchers have called «acoustowetting,» works on a chip made of lithium
niobate — a piezoelectric material capable of converting electrical energy into mechanical pressure.
In optical fibres, where second harmonic generation has a practical application, engineers work with inorganic salts such as potassium dihydrogenposphate and lithium
niobate.
