We've tried to help with this with the Pumpables Milk Genie by including 3
shield sizes, but how cool would it be if the breastshield was made out of some smart material that moulded instantly to your breast, matching your breast and
nipple size perfectly.
Some pumps come with an included one -
size fits all type of breast
shield, which can be uncomfortable for moms with larger breasts and / or
nipples and can hinder their milk output.
One important thing to know that was not immediately obvious to me is that you can have large breasts and still need a small
size breast
shield, because the breast
shield size is reflective of your
nipple and not your breast.
I've been exclusively pumping for my 2 month old and at first I had no problem at all, I slowly start getting pain so I changed the
size of the
shield but now I'm not only getting
nipple pain but also pain where the
shields sit....
Using the wrong
shield size can cause pain or irritation while pumping, milk blisters, and even injure your
nipples.
If you see your
nipple blanching (turning white) or continues to rub against the sides whilst using the pump you need a larger
shield size.
If you feel like your breasts are still full after pumping, or have sore or damaged
nipples, you may need a different
shield size.
If your
nipples rub up against the walls of the
shield you either need to reposition it to the middle or
size up to a 27 mm or larger.
However, if you do decide to use a
nipple shield, learn how to use it correctly, wear the right
size, and work closely with your doctor.
So, that would be the first thing is you want to make sure that you get a
nipple shield that's appropriate
size.

nipple shield do come in different
sizes as your
nipples.
Premature Babies: Some preemies do well with a small
sized nipple shield when they are learning to latch on.
You might also buy different -
size breast
shields that more comfortably fit your
nipples.
To use these pumps, use a
shield that is the right
size for your
nipple and breast.
Using breast
shields that fit well, they should be comfortable, not compress the breasts or damage the
nipples; a range of breast
shield sizes are available if the tunnel is too tight
If it is, the
nipple shield is the wrong
size or shape.
As long as you are using a 24 mm (medium
size) Medela brand
nipple shield you should be fine.
As long as you are using the correct
size nipple shield (I recommend the 24 mm) and you are putting the
shield on correctly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using it.
About the
size of the
nipple shield, can you use a 24 mm
shield with a 5 week old or do you need to wait until the baby is older / bigger for this
size?
As long as you are using the correct
size nipple shield and the baby is on deeply, It should be okay.
My first suggestion would be to make sure you are using the correct
size nipple shield.
Based on what you are describing, it sounds like you have the wrong
size nipple shield.

nipples (larger
size available at small added cost).
Usually I recommend a 24 mm
nipple shield, but if your
nipple is too large for that, then you would need to special order the next
size up.
It is possible if the
nipple shield is not being put on correctly, or you are not using the right
size (medela 24 mm) it can cause your
nipples to be more sore and decrease milk transfer.
However I ONLY recommend using a 24 mm, medium
sized shield as this is in my opinion the only
size that can aid in production and decrease pain of
nipple trauma.
Is it maybe because I am still healing from cracked
nipples from when I had the wrong
size shield on?
These
nipple shields run a little bit bigger than some of the other brands out there, so some customers have needed to order a
size down.
I am supplementing and I don't have a stash... I have struggled with breastfeeding from tongue tie to LO never latching to finger feeding,
nipple shields of all
sizes (which LO hated) I own 4 breast pumps the recent one I have had for two months (the willow) I got so I could be mobile.
These
nipple shields fit most breast
sizes with no trouble and can be used quickly and easily even on the go.
You may find that each breast has a different
nipple size, you may find that your
nipple size changes over the day, and you may also find that the best
shield size for you goes up or down as time goes on.
Incorrect breast
shield size can lead to engorgement issues as well as mastitis and even cause
nipple and breast tissue irritation.
Make sure the breast
shield is the right
size for your
nipple.
It may help to use the smaller «premie»
size nipple shield, if that's comfortable for you.
