nitrous oxide emissions by 50 percent and increasing water productivity by 25 percent.
The early results which found higher levels
of nitrous oxide emissions from zero till all seem to have employed surface application of N fertilizer.
The available evidence is quite limited, but does suggest that zero tillage is not likely to lead to an increase
in nitrous oxide emissions, provided that the nitrogen fertilizer is banded, as is the common practice with farmers using zero tillage systems.
Many previous studies in western Canada
on nitrous oxide emissions from zero till systems (all with surface application of N fertilizer) measured only growing season emissions.
The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, brings together dozens of studies from across the globe that analyzed how
nitrous oxide emissions increased based on different rates of fertilizer application.
Production of organic corn resulted in the
greatest nitrous oxide emissions and represented about 8 % of total GHG emission; corn also had the highest carbon dioxide emissions per hectare.
«A global assessment of
marine nitrous oxide emissions is, however, difficult because we do not know exactly where and how much nitrous oxide is produced,» says marine chemist Damian L. Arévalo - Martínez from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
One possible analytical method which might resolve this sampling problem would be the tunable diode laser, which integrates
nitrous oxide emissions over a broad area.
The EPA is currently investigating 482,000 Volkswagen and Audi diesel models sold from 2009 - 2015 for using a «defeat device» to meet standards
for nitrous oxide emissions.
He does not have further publications forthcoming
about nitrous oxide emissions in western Canada except for one publication with Dan Pennock to be published in Biogeochemistry.
In this respect, the members of the BATFARM project have developed software (BATFARM) to select the best farm waste technologies and practices to be applied according to the characteristics of the farm in question; it will enable the loss in nutrients (N, P, K, Cu, Zn) of the farm to be reduced, and the ammonia, methane and
nitrous oxide emissions produced by each of the various production phases (housing, waste storage, waste treatment and the applying of it to the soil) to be cut.
When spring thaw emissions were combined with growing season emissions, the conventional tillage system actually had higher
total nitrous oxide emissions than the zero till system. We suggest that this type of experiment (full year emission measurements) be repeated with deep banding of N fertilizer, which would be expected to further reduce emissions from zero till systems.
It also aims to stabilise the 2005
nitrous oxide emission level, increase the 2001 forest coverage rate by 20 %, and increase the carbon sink by 50 Mt over the 2005 level by 2010.
For vegetable products, energy use often is the dominant contribution of carbon dioxide emissions, but
nitrous oxide emissions related to nitrogen application and fabrication also may be significant.
The team discovered that the human impact on biogenic methane and
nitrous oxide emissions far outweighed the human impact on the terrestrial uptake of carbon dioxide, meaning that humans have caused the terrestrial biosphere to further contribute to warming.
Mangeot estimates that the Continuous Descent Approach enabled by ADS — B, during which aircraft glide in with their engines at idle thrust,
cut nitrous oxide emissions (a greenhouse gas) by about 34 percent as well as noise pollution by some 30 percent.
This is up to a fifth of the estimated marine
nitrous oxide emissions worldwide and significantly exceeds similar upwelling areas in other tropical oceans,» says Arévalo - Martínez.
The team confirmed the environmental benefits to introducing legumes and found that in such cropping systems,
overall nitrous oxide emissions reduced by approximately 20 - 30 % and fertilizer use was down by 25 % to almost 40 % in some cases.
In the new study, they looked at particles that were fresh and those that were aged by a coating of nitric acid, which results from
several nitrous oxide emissions that are primarily from vehicle exhaust and biomass burning.
The same study estimates the sector's share of overall GHG emissions, using 100 - year GWPs to convert methane and
nitrous oxide emissions into CO2 - equivalent figures, at 14.5 percent.
We suggest that the same experiments recommended in items 1 to 5 include measurement of nitric oxide emissions as well
as nitrous oxide emissions.
The net effect needs to be measuredin future studies, which
include nitrous oxide emission measurements.Furthermore, some studies have indicated that adoption of zero tillage may lead to an increase in nitrogen fertilizer requirements.
Thus experiments are needed to
measure nitrous oxide emissions even when data is available on N fertilizer efficiency for various N fertilizer sources and methods of placement.
A DEFRA report published earlier this year showed that by 2006, «Methane emissions, excluding those from natural sources, were 53 per cent below 1990 levels» and that «
Nitrous oxide emissions fell by 40 per cent between 1990 and 2006.»
Nitrous oxide emissions occur naturally through many sources associated with the nitrogen cycle, which is the natural circulation of nitrogen among the atmosphere, plants, animals, and microorganisms that live in soil and water.
Widespread overuse of artificial nitrogen fertilizer, for instance, much of which is wasted in leaching and runoff, contributes to three - quarters of total
US nitrous oxide emissions.
Where quantified, adding manure or inorganic fertilizer, planting legumes, or incorporating crop residues all resulted in
nitrous oxide emissions offsetting 75 — 310 % of the sequestered CO2 (Robertson et al. 2000; Brown et al. 2004; Li et al. 2005).
