During one of the last big kerfuffles, wherein Amazon tried to push around a number of small POD publishers into making them use their own in - house print service (Angela Hoy and Booklocker fought back on that one and won) many of the other indy authors that I was hanging out with as part of our on - line support group) tried to put more of our efforts into marketing our books through Barnes & Noble, and to Borders.

Much of the blockbuster work — the work you see in brick - and - mortars like Barnes and Noble or on your mobile device — has been published under the Random House name since 1927.

It's an interesting column, because it points out that Barnes and Noble acquired a publishing house of their own in 2003 — after which other big book - sellers (including Borders and Costco) announced they'd they stop carrying books from that publisher.

Nominees include the above mentioned surprising slump in indie sales, the not surprising shrinking revenues at the major publishing houses, the also not surprising continued self immolation of Barnes & Noble, and my winner... The impressive (and frightening) maturation of Amazon as a media conglomerate.

They are ReaderLink (in the supply of books to mass merchants), Amazon (as an online retailer), Barnes & Noble (as a bricks - and - mortar retailer) and Penguin Random House (as a commercial trade publisher).
