Tom was selected from a full cohort of 36 longlisted artists from seventeen universities across the south - east, nominated by directors and curators from Aspex, De La Warr, MK Gallery, Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary galleries, whose work has been shown in a series of group exhibitions over the summer.

All of the museum's 21 outreach committees worldwide have worked with a renowned local curator to nominate artists, from which NMWA's curators will select one artist from each committee's shortlist whose work will be featured in the most extensive Women to Watch exhibition to date, at NMWA in Washington, D.C. in June 2018.

But the vast majority of publicly nominated artists were «ghastly Sunday painters, 600 of whose friends had clubbed together for them».

Shrigley, a Glasgow - based artist whose pictures and sculptures are known for their mordant humour, said landing the commission made up for not winning the 2013 Turner Prize, for which he was nominated.

For the milestone year of the forward - thinking exhibition series, the curators asked former featured Project Series artists — including CalArts alumni Christina Fernandez (Art MFA 96) and Hirokazu Kosaka (Chouinard 70) and School of Art faculty Charles Gaines — to each nominate two emerging or lesser - known artists based in the Los Angeles area whose work contributes to the vibrant contemporary - art dialogue.

«It's the first prize nominated and selected by artists,» said Lisa Phillips, director of the New Museum, under whose aegis the award was conceived.
