As adults we start off by falling into 2 lighter phases of
sleep, followed by the
deeper stage (
non-REM), and then into our dream
stage (REM) before starting all over again.
Night terrors usually happen about 2 or 3 hours after a child falls asleep, when
sleep moves from the
deepest stage of
non-REM sleep to lighter REM
sleep.
It may seem that your child's
sleep patterns finally resemble yours, but he'll spend more time than you do in REM
sleep and the
deeper stages of
non-REM sleep.
