Yes, the
books they carry may be made available for purchase
by bookstores, but almost
none of them actually get stocked.
But I hope that if I query 300 agents and
NONE of them thinks they can sell my
book,
by then I'll have saved up enough money to hire a good editor to tell me whether the fault is in the business or my writing.
We as readers are poorer a lot
of writers who suck at publicity, but are great story tellers, and publishing actually lose because their margins will be less (and readers as result, because the money goes to the 1:100 000, and there is
none left for the good
books by lousy publicists.)
For my print published
books, I've had degrees
of input from
none to not too much but
by and large, I think that's a good thing.
A lot
of us are taking back our pen names,
by putting on the cover and in description something like «Sarah A. Hoyt writing as Sarah D'Almeida» Agatha Christie
books in the US often have completely different names than in the UK and publishers on line who know you might read both will say stuff like «And Then There Was
None» originally published as «Ten Little Indians.»
None of those
books, however, are
by an author that news shows like 60 Minutes is «drooling over.»

Do you feel exhausted
by the long list
of things you have to do to promote your
book, frustrated that
none of them actually seem to work and fed up with everything costing money?
Flash back to a little over a week ago: This is the first year that Marvel Comics as a Publisher did not win any Will Eisner Awards for excellence in comics, and
none of the creators who won individual awards like penciller, writer, inker, colourist (awards that were basically invented to recognize achievements
by creators working on assembly - line big - two superhero
books) had any substantial Marvel comics work this year.

none of them seems to proof wonders like Smashwords Marketing Guide.
If you do want to read an actual tome about publicity you can try
books like Publicize Your
Book, The Savvy Author's Guide to
Book Publicity or Publicity: 7 Steps to Publicize Just About Anything —
none of which I've read,
by the way, but I like the titles.
