I don't entirely disagree with the posts above, but my understanding is that for plain - old main - stream atheism, it is best defined by talking about belief versus lack of belief.
On the other hand, people who comment on feeds from advocates for atheism, like Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris, are going to be commenting about something they don't like or approve of — religion.
So when your talking about Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc. it wasn't their atheism that made them do the evil things they did any more than say their lack in the belief in unicorns.
