Fundamentally, Christian spirituality is
not about attaining an
altered state of consciousness but about widening the range
of genuine caring about others, so that we act for their interest
not out
of duty but out
of love.
This is
not to say that practices ascetics engage in can
not be entered into as tactics or methods: fasting, silence, vegetarianism, chanting, formal meditations, and celibacy, if freely entered into as methods (never as «good works» — for they are
not such), may prove helpful for some people bent on self - purification or the unleashing
of altered states of consciousness.
The question
of course is: how does a person like me who is experiencing psychotic symptoms and psychic phenomena while in an
altered state of consciousness know whether or
not it is god who is communicating with them?
Psychosis / most psychiatric illnesses often arise in adolescence or in early adult life however 75 per cent
of children with mental health disorders / issues do
not get the help they need — I fell into that 75 per cent, I was misdiagnosed by a doctor and then the self - induced trance - like
altered state of consciousness induced by intense / deep meditation and prayer coupled with the theology about how prayer and God work in a Christian's life (more on this below) just pushed me right over the edge.
It certainly is good to have finally found out that Christianity is nothing more than just tradition, ritual and culture and that all the things which the Bible says about God and prayer are
not true — God does
not speak to or lead or guide or direct anyone or put thoughts in anyone's mind or show them signs or speak to their heart or mind or tells them what to do or calls people or chooses people or has a plan for people's lives whether they are in an
altered state of consciousness / transcendent
state or whether they are in an unaltered cognitive
state.
Given these Biblical examples, how does a pastor tell persons that they are
not supposed to pray intensely or pray to the point
of falling into a trance — an
altered state of consciousness?
I'm glad I found out that God does
not speak to or lead or guide or direct me or put thoughts in my mind or show me signs whether I am in an
altered state of consciousness / transcendent
state or whether I am in an unaltered cognitive
state.
But, although some
of the specific experiences, such as pains, may be (at least virtually) determined by the brain (at least in what we usually consider «normal,» as distinct from «
altered,»
states of consciousness), others, such as thoughts and decisions, are
not, but are based upon the mind's self - determination.
