But this day of typical Easter activities was preceded by something considered an anomaly by any President except this one: several early morning tweets defending his decision
not to label China a
currency manipulator — a policy reversal from his campaign rhetoric — and criticizing the protesters in Saturday's tax marches who demanded he release his returns.
But his solutions for shrinking the U.S. trade deficit with China, namely labeling China a
currency manipulator and placing tariffs on Chinese goods, are
not as heretical as you might think.
The plan seems to assume that we can pressure countries
not to let their
currencies depreciate, as suggested by the intention to have the new treasury secretary name China as an exchange rate
manipulator.
Last year, Mr. Trump said he had decided
not to designate China as a
currency manipulator, in part because China was cooperating in the pressure campaign.
There was that spasm a few years ago when China was accused of being a «
currency manipulator,» but outside of that, the US government hasn't really talked down the dollar at all.
While there may or may
not be an eventual tariff placed on importers, one thing I know for sure is that the dollar is higher since the election, especially against the yuan, and the president is no longer committed to calling China a
currency manipulator.
