I did some research and realized the moms who didn't like Tide complained of chemical burn and
detergent build up.
Jennifer I've seen it claimed that while
detergents leave a residue (which is frankly enough for me) that residue does
not build up over time because it washes out and is replaced every wash.

They are
not faded, beat down, and there is no mythical
detergent build up.
The only time that pre-folds have caused a rash for my babies was if there was
detergent build -
up in the fabric... 100 % cotton pre-folds shouldn't cause allergies unless the child is allergic to cotton or to the processing (like bleaching) used, right?
Over time, even with number of washes, the residue
build -
up whether it's the
detergent that wasn't rinsed off properly, fragrance, optical brigtheners, bacteria growth or anything that left behind accumulate enough for the smell to come back.
If you wash other laundry in
detergents that aren't safe for cloth diapers, or if you use softeners in your other laundry, then those additives can
build up in your washer and dryer — and eventually on your diapers, too.

up and «ammonia» odor from foul - smelling or leaky cloth diapers.
You may
not have enough absorbency, the diaper may be full and ready to be changed, they may
not fit your child properly, you may have mineral /
detergent build up, or you may have buildup from diaper creams or fabric softeners.
A: You will need to find a
detergent that doesn't leave a
build up on the diapers and isn't harsh on the fabric.
Most of the regular laundry
detergents you find at the store have additives that can
build up on cloth diapers or cause other problems, particularly if your diapers aren't rinsed well enough.
If you are stripping your cloth diapers because they are no longer absorbing because of
detergent build -
up, it is
not a good idea to soak them in
detergent for a few hours.
This is in an effort to prevent
detergent build -
up but you have to look at it this way — if you use less
detergent, your diapers are
not going to get sufficiently cleaned.
However, if
detergent build -
up was
not your problem and your diapers are still
not absorbing (and / or stinks), you may need an alternative method of stripping — see Alternative Stripping Methods below.
I was under the assumption that we have softer water here so I didn't think it was a
detergent build up issue.
I tried the retailers ways and my diapers reeked and I tried the cloth store I visited out of towns advice and got soap
build up because they told me to use actual soaps (charlies) and
not detergent.
*** I have moderately hard water, I do
not add a water softener, I just use a tiny bit more
detergent, 1 - 2 extra lines, 7 years never a problem with
build up in my diapers ****
(If you haven't noticed, I'm
not a fan of perfumes in
detergent — it can mask diaper odor and lead to
build up because you haven't noticed that the diapers stink!)

Insufficient
detergent will
not clean effectively, too much
detergent will clean sufficiently and if there is insufficient rinsing only
detergent is left behind (
not build up) and
not dirt or bad smell.
How are we ever going to help moms get their diapers clean and bacteria free and in good shape, when
detergent «
build up» is so feared that we're going so far as to *
not use enough * (or none at all!)
Detergent build up is
not the only reason for diaper stink, but it can contribute.
You use the example of your
detergent built up clothing
not needing to be absorbent, but you probably rely on your towels, wash cloths, and cleaning rags to be, right?
Build -
up on diapers is residue from your
detergent that doesn't wash completely away.
Just an FYI: Homemade
detergents are
not recommended for most cloth diapers due to
build up issues.
