Generally, I'm
not too much in favor of
painting over old
wood, but your project has me rethinking that!
(Here's a piece where the
wood wasn't that great to begin with, so

Well, in this case I had the perfect flat thin piece of
wood (
not even sure what project this came from) and decided to
paint it white and make a sign to fill this big empty wall in my Kitchen that of course needed a vintage «EAT» sign.
I'm gearing up to repaint a
wood IKEA table... I am going to sand it down, but
not sure if I will just use regular
paint or chalkboard type... I was thinking of leaving the top the

I had read a while back that when spray
painting wood it is important to prime it first so that it doesn't turn out looking too brown once it's
painted (so technically I sprayed the ladder 4 times... ugh!).
Do you have any insight on how well textured fabric would take
paint??? The
wood part of my chair is flawless, the fabric -
not so much.

You can barely tell the spaces in between aren't
painted since the bare
wood and the
paint are similar colors.

Now I've said it before, and I'll say it again - natural
wood is gorgeous and it was on her too - but didn't match my dining room set - so I knew I would
paint it - just wasn't sure what color.

It's possible the
paint hadn't cured long enough to add the wipe on poly, but my guess is it was an adhesion problem between the
wood and the
paint that caused it to strip off.
You don't need to do anything to the raw
wood before
painting.
Even though you don't necessarily need to prime
wood before chalk
paint, I should have in this instant being an old piece with old varnish.
You shouldn't have a yellowing issue with either of those products, however I know if you
painted a piece that's prone to bleeding and didn't prime it first, the sealer can occasionally (rarely) draw out the
wood tannins and make it look a bit yellow.
When this happens it's typically from the poly pulling the
wood tannins through the
paint and
not because the poly itself is yellowing.
Sometimes I don't want a dark coat of
paint to show through, just the idea that there's
wood underneath.
I was going to
paint something on the reclaimed
wood hanging on the wall but I kind of love it just as it is so I haven't done anything with it yet.
I always want to laugh when
painted furniture is called a trend, furniture had been
painted for hundreds of years, it's
not new!!!!!! I think both
wood and
painted furniture will work in a lovely blend forever, sure things will date (certain colors will definitely be of an era) but the idea of reworking things and making over things has been, and will be around forever!
And even worse, I hated the orange tone of the

yeah... so
wood finish and chalk
paint don't mix well.
If you want to
paint the deck with chalk
paint you have to make sure the
wood is
not at all wet and the weather is
not damp or humid when you are
painting since this will add moisture to the
wood.
If you are still
not sure, mix up a small amount and
paint a scrap piece of
wood to get the feel for
painting with chalk
paint.
I don't have a problem with
painting pine as it was always a cheap
wood intended for
painting in the first place, but oak is a different matter.
For my projects, I want to see the
paint underneath only and
not sand through to the
wood.

not always one for
painted wood, but this is just perfect for your fabulous kitchen.
