On view in Baker Library is the remarkable fresco mural cycle by José Clemente Orozco titled The Epic of American Civilization, which the
noted Mexican modernist
artist painted from 1932 to 1934.
Speaking to their contrasting
views on such «segregated» exhibitions, Morris and Hockley
noted that while, in both title and subject, the exhibition «is focused purposefully
on the work and experiences of black women... it also features the work of men and non-black women of colour, and, through ephemera, references the work of white women
artists, feminists, and art world influencers.»
For his rousing Lens Paintings, now
on view at Michael Werner, Polke used a rake - like tool to craft ridged sheets of thick gel medium (a material, the
artist dryly
notes, that is often employed «to add the brushstrokes to the van Gogh reproduction»), then placed these translucent scrims over his canvases, distorting the underlying scenes.
