Whitehead believes that Plato discovered those general ideas which are relevant to everything that happens: The Ideas, the Physical Elements, The Psyche, The Eros, The Harmony, The Mathematical Relations, The Receptacle.30 In adapting Plato's seven basic notions Whitehead takes «
the notion of actuality as in its essence process «31 as his starting point.
Hence, in the general sense in which
the notion of actuality is tied to the notion of self - realization, the superjective existence of an occasion is as actual as its subjective existence.
Also closely related to
the notion of actuality, in fact correlative with it, is the notion of possibility.
From these feelings we get
the notions of actuality, causality, the past, and hence of givenness.

of all as an abstract, universal
notion, Walker reduces the
actuality of the oppressor to an abstract
notion.
However this break is complete and systematic in Process and Reality and most explicit in Adventures
of Ideas, Chapter X, where the
notion of one
actuality as truly present in another, and not merely represented in it, is asserted to be the one fundamental metaphysical advance since Plato (AI 214f.).
And, as we have seen, the
notion of God arises in «the question whether the process
of the temporal world passes into other
actualities, bound together in an order in which novelty does not mean loss.

of the attempted application

actualities, and (iii) two arguments from physics (concerning Big Bang and Thermodynamic theory, respectively) which attempt to show that probably the natural universe had an absolute beginning a finite time ago.
Although Joseph Bracken's
notion of «collective agency» is an interesting recent attempt at a compromise between the orthodox interpretation and positions like that
of Edward Pols and this paper, collective agency fails to give sufficient unity and
actuality to persons.
SP as the state
of being harboring the thoughts
of existences to be transmuted from possibilities to
actualities may be compared to the
notion of God - for - us, the ishvara
of Hinduism in Panikker, and the
notion of cit in Upadhyaya.
All that is settled about them is settled by present

actualities of the world into his own being with such complete adequacy that the significance
of all things is fully appreciated and preserved.13
Whitehead protests that while one may choose to use such a
notion as a helpful abstraction, one can treat such absolute time as an
actuality equal to all other
actualities only at the expense
of coherence.
Fulfillment entails a
notion vital to the development
of an ethics
of character and virtue from a process perspective, that all creatures, all
actuality, drive towards the experience
of beauty, richness
of experience.
Indeed when we come to discuss the reformed subjectivist principle connected with Whitehead's proposed solution to the problem
of modem philosophy, we shall see that it stands in direct contradiction to both Cartesian dualism and the
notion of «vacuous
actuality.»
I simply do not see that the problem so cast takes into account the problems relating either to dualism or to the
notion of «vacuous
actuality.»
This statement, together with Whitehead's discussion
of the relation
of the reformed subjectivist principle to the principles
of relativity and
of process (PR 252) also makes clear Whitehead's repudiation
of dualism and
of the
notion of «vacuous
actuality.»
Cartesian dualism and the
notion of «vacuous
actuality» are also among the several other doctrines or
notions included by Whitehead under this heading.
Like Schleiermacher, process theology depends heavily upon the
notion of an evolutionary world
of interdependent
actualities.
In virtue
of its comprehensiveness as a metaphysical category, therefore, the term society is much more suitable than the term substance to describe the various ontological totalities encountered in human experience.4 Yet this key insight into the ontological
actuality of Whiteheadian societies is easily lost from view unless one ponders what Hegel was trying to express with the somewhat elusive
notion of Spirit.
Accordingly, on the basis
of the empiricist doctrine (which Whitehead accepts) «that nothing is to be received into the philosophical scheme which is not discoverable as an element in subjective experience,» the subjectivist principle entails that the
notion of causal influence between
actualities must be dismissed (PR 253).
It is also on the basis
of this distinction, along with the
notion that there are various levels
of actualities, that Whitehead explains our common belief not only that some macroscopic beings have freedom, but also that some have more freedom than others.
That
actuality means «unification» is understandable (and, in that sense, is explained) by the way the ultimate descriptive
notion of creativity has to be conceived.
He defines «vacuous
actuality,» «which haunts realistic philosophy,» as «the
notion of res vera devoid
of subjective immediacy.»
As to the question «what» it is evident that for Whitehead the whole burden
of the answer rests upon the
notion of creativity, in both
of its «functions,» namely, as principle
of unification and as principle
of novelty The basic feature
of reality is its creativity, and that creativity is always a particular way
of bringing together the given multiplicity The way this is done explains why these
actualities are the way they are.
This lecture seems to have been devoted in large part to criticisms
of Alexander, specifically that his
notion of «emergence» is too vague and muddled to give any useful account
of «cognitive experience» in particular, or
of the more general observations
of the novel and creative features
of determinate
actualities of whatever sort.
The
notion of an actual formative element follows from his earlier claim: I believe there is continuity between his earlier assertion, «God is not concrete, but He is the ground for concrete
actuality» (Science 178), and the formative element.
Here the Platonic
notion of the receptacle also is relevant for conceiving creativity: 15 creativity is the a priori receptacle, the a priori metaphysical locus
of all
actuality.
The view that
actuality is activity rather than primal act
of being leads Leclerc to his final disagreement with the scholastic, and hence Suarecian theory: his
notion that form is distinct from
actuality.

of departure from
