With very limited options, I signed up for an Institute of Children's
Novel Writing class, sent off my money, received my course instructions, read the first chapter of the workbook, wrote a chapter, sent it to my instructor, repeat.

write a breakout
novel, and I think that's because a breakout
novel — which let's call, here, first -
class fiction — is the exception to a general rule of otherwise safe, largely mediocre «ocean of genre imitations if not amateurish
