In this exhibition, Women: New (Re) Presentations, McGinness expands upon his ever - growing language of symbols with a concentrated yet expansive body of work based upon the traditional academic
drawing of the female
nude figure.
One series of
drawings, probably made in the 1970s, depicts
nude figures tussling — copulation as a poetic wrestling match.
Of course, as art historian Linda Nochlin famously observed, it was difficult for women to paint
nudes when historically they weren't even allowed to attend
figure -
drawing classes because of the naked people necessarily present.

I especially recommend a group of
figure studies, the best of which is Reclining
Nude (After Shelby Creagh) from 1982, which trades classic linear life
drawing marks for a heavier, angled black line that in many ways can be extended from these early works into the idiom of the silhouette for which he is best known.
Their frank content
draws comparison with some of those Schiele almost certainly influenced, for example, Lucien Freud, albeit Freud's
nude figures were mostly set against some sort of background, whereas Schiele's were not.
She is noted, first and foremost for her
figure painting and classical - style
figure drawing of large - scale obese female
nudes, characterized by their extreme physicality.
Paul Cadmus was an American artist best known for his paintings and
drawings of
nude male
figures.

figures and black and white portraits of dogs are being juxtaposed with Shishkin's colourful and richly patterned paintings.
The exhibition is kicked off in high style with a choice 1907 Picasso study for his epochal «Demoiselles D'Avignon»; Matisse's 1916 study for the «Portrait of Sarah Stein,» the finished painting of which is also in the collection; Amedeo Modigliani's 1913 «Blue Caryatid,» a
figure study characteristic of the artist's archaicizing tendencies; a 1978
drawing of adolescent eroticism by Balthus; and a 1925
nude by Matisse of a mature woman luxuriantly spread out on a chaise for his personal delectation.
In the
Nudes in the Landscape show, as in Women at Work, all of the female
figures are in fact based on
drawings from a single
nude model who posed for Ms. Dodd in the model's Maine garden, where all the props to be seen in the
figure compositions - the clothesline with laundry, the wood pile, the house and garden - were already in place.

Sensing there was «something missing», in the mid-1950s Diebenkorn took up life
drawing, gradually finding subjects —
nudes,
figures reading, dark interiors, everyday still lifes, suburban landscapes to fill the void.
