This selection begins
with the tradition of the academic
nude study and progresses to embrace different genres, from both secular and religious contexts.
His
studies of human nature, most often in the form of the female
nude, are rich
with references — a floral headpiece, delicate compote, gilded frame remnants, a peacock feather, and soft textiles.
Reflecting Ruff's own deep engagement
with the history of photography, selections from his extensive personal collection of photographic materials will be included in the show, including an 1885
study of a spark by Trouvelot; electrocardiograms from 1909;
nude studies from 1923, and two majestic photograms by Arthur Siegel from the 1940s.
He experiments
with etchings, monoprints, oil and acrylic paintings and has become known on the East End for his
studies of the
nude figure.
In an interview
with a Tate Gallery conservator the artist stated that
Nude and Reclining
Nude (Tate Gallery N05975) «were not squared up from preliminary
studies» and suggested that the grid might relate to an earlier painting.

The exhibition is kicked off in high style
with a choice 1907 Picasso
study for his epochal «Demoiselles D'Avignon»; Matisse's 1916
study for the «Portrait of Sarah Stein,» the finished painting of which is also in the collection; Amedeo Modigliani's 1913 «Blue Caryatid,» a figure
study characteristic of the artist's archaicizing tendencies; a 1978 drawing of adolescent eroticism by Balthus; and a 1925
nude by Matisse of a mature woman luxuriantly spread out on a chaise for his personal delectation.
