Following an inspection
of official exam data by BBC Radio 4's Today programme, it has been revealed that the
number of pupils receiving
extra time in state schools is less in comparison to private, with one in eight being given a time boost.
The
number of pupils being given 25 per cent
extra time in GCSE and A Level exams because
of a special need is rising.
The rising
number of pupils needing primary places has seen many schools having to expand and add
extra classes, particularly in London and some
of England's major cities including Manchester and Bristol.
There will be
extra funding for «sparsity», such as rural areas and small schools, places with a high level
of mobility in its school population and funding where there are sharp increases in
pupil numbers.
As well as the pressure to create hundreds
of thousands
of extra places to meet rising
pupil numbers, there is also a legacy
of existing buildings which need to be repaired or rebuilt.
Ofqual said it was fair for
pupils with disabilities to receive a «reasonable adjustment» when taking exams but some schools were much more likely to have high
numbers of pupils receiving
extra help and if there were no «obvious good reasons» it would now ask them to «review their approach».
Putting the complexities to one side, will paying schools
extra for more
pupils taking A-level or core maths actually increase the
numbers of pupils taking maths?
The prime minister said the government would provide a further # 7bn for
extra places for rising
numbers of pupils.
The
number of pupils in England given 25 %
extra time in GCSEs and A-level exams because
of a special need has almost doubled over five years.
Many schools have had to add
extra classrooms - and a growing
number of primary schools will have to expand to more than a thousand
pupils.
The rise
of supersize primary schools reflects urgent efforts to find places for the surging
numbers of pupils - with official figures showing that an
extra 455,000 places will be needed in England by 2015.
In the event that either school is oversubscribed against its planned admission
number for 2018, we will consider voluntarily admitting
extra pupils to ensure that no one is disadvantaged by the distance criteria
of the current academies» admissions policies.
But the research argued that the system
of recruiting and retaining staff was failing to keep pace with the rapidly increasing demand for
extra teachers, as rising
numbers of pupils have seen schools expanding.
The report found an
extra 5,000 leaders would be needed by 2022 because
of growing
pupil numbers, but predicted more than half
of current leaders would leave in the next six years.
The decline in the
number of schools has put pressures on the system, with an
extra 121,000
pupils starting school in the same time period.
