An unprecedented
number of galleries appeared on the scene, particularly in downtown New York.

Most Artangel projects are installations and events created for a specific location and therefore usually
appear only once, with a
number of film and video works regularly on display at UK
galleries and museums.
On the wall full
of Canone Aureo works on paper, in
Gallery 3, the collaging
of numbers and marks can
appear like the fevered working out
of a mathematical problem, a cosmic equation that is far more pleasing to the eye and subliminally satisfying than any professorial, blackboard scratchings.
Tillmans's own image rarely
appears here (while the
gallery permits photography, the exhibition leaflet specifies «no selfie - sticks»), but the gregariousness
of the curating — which features a rare videowork, a live programme, ephemera from the artist's Berlin - based project space, juvenilia like a foray into garment design and an inexplicable gong sculpture — reveals the artist in a surprising
number of dimensions; he even codesigned the catalogue.
Like other works in this series, which is currently one
of the subjects
of a show at New York's Pace
Gallery, the work features a
number of collaged elements that
appear to be disintegrating.
In the same exhibition, she also showed a
number of floor sculptures made from alum which
appeared quite formal and solid, several
of them for example mimicking the steel columns
of the
gallery, but which will slowly change in chemical composition and break down if submitted to particular external conditions.
Perception shifts depending on where we place our bodies inside White's provisional structure — density gives way to diffusion; shapes, letterforms, and
numbers appear and then dissolve from the networks
of yarn; and forms reflect and multiply in a large, mirrored surface, playfully linking what we see to how we move through the
gallery.
There is growing interest in Smith's work and legacy among institutions in Europe and a
number of her Xerox books will
appear in a group exhibition at Raven Row
gallery, London, next year.
A selection
of 38 images from The Little Screens — the largest group ever to come to auction and a far greater
number than
appear on Lee Friedlander's gallerist, the Fraenkel
Gallery's website, which otherwise carries a substantial cross-section
of the photographer's work — are included in the sale and viewing exhibition.
