Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will apply the definitions for multiunit, unit, and subunit to place
fractions greater than 1 on the
number line and label these points as mixed
numbers.

Across the country, the
number of charter schools that are diverse
by design has been steadily rising in recent years, in cities including New York, Denver, and Washington D.C. Scholars at the Century Foundation in Washington D.C., a nonpartisan research organization, estimate that about two dozen such charters have opened in recent years although they still comprise only a tiny
fraction of charter schools.
It can be used to focus on additional grade level targets, including comparing
fractions, multiplying
fractions by whole
numbers, adding and subtracting
fractions, and comparing and rounding decimals.
By the end of Grade 4, students should be able to identify and represent
fractions and decimals, and compare them on a
number line or with other common representations of
fractions and decimals.
By teaching for transfer, students compared and contrasted elements in both music and
fractions focusing on the following elements: time signature, note value, and
number lines.
Build
fractions from unit
fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole
numbers.
