While some age groups performed better or on par with other industrial nations in literacy and
numeracy, on the whole 49 % of Canadians are still
below what the OECD would characterize as «desired» literacy
levels, and 55 % are
below the desired
level of
numeracy.
Results from the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show that roughly 15 million American children — more children than reside in all of England — are achieving
below basic
levels of literacy and
numeracy.
Working at
levels significantly
below age expectations, particularly in literacy or
numeracy.
Even if those percentages of children joined the school
below the expected
levels in literacy and
numeracy, then it would be expected that the ones who were at or above would get at least a C at GCSE
level.
David Lees, headteacher at Saxmundham Free School, said: «The group of Year 9 students who joined us when the school opened in September 2012 faced a lot of individual educational challenges with 45 per cent at the time being
below the expected
levels in literacy and 55 per cent
below the expected
levels in
numeracy.
Numeracy and literacy in schools are also in need of focused attention as they remain well
below the national average, as do school attendance
levels.
