Tandem
nursing preemie twins is very difficult.
Footstools are useful for first - time moms, moms with short legs, nursing after a c - section, breastfeeding a newborn, or
nursing a preemie.
It was one of many, many things I tried on my quest to
nurse my preemie.
My BFF was a retired nurse and while she had never nursed a baby herself her medical knowledge mixed with the information from her mother (we communicated over the phone because she lives over 1000 miles away) who had
nursed a preemie helped me have success.

I hand expressed after every time I
nursed (mine weren't
preemie, but I still pumped after every time I
nursed for two weeks to jump - start my supply), and I think that helped a lot.
It can make such a difference in breastfeeding success if you're breastfeeding a
preemie, breastfeeding with large nipples, or
nursing a baby who has difficulty latching on.
Before I had a
preemie, I thought that if I could just hold her and
nurse her she'd be fine.
NICU
nurses will help you learn how to bottle feed your
preemie, using some time - tested tricks.
I had a 31 weeker, and while I was * immensely * grateful for the amazing NICU care he received, I would go home and read Jeevan's blog and feel somewhat guilty and so, so sad to read that while my
preemie was snug and warm and fed in his isolette, being watched over by highly trained
nurses and respiratory therapists, a baby older than mine died because the power went out in the hospital overnight (no backup generator) and they couldn't keep him warm enough.
Baby Niece was a 28 - week
preemie, so when she came home from the NICU age about 6 weeks, she used to
nurse A LOT.
He was a
preemie and was jaundiced, so we really had to push him to
nurse.

preemie, I had to pump for him for the first month and I kind of figured it out when the
nurses were a are little shocked by me bringing in like 12 ounces at a time for each pumping and I just ended up encouraging my oversupplies so I could donate and then this time I ended up having it, I just started pumping it as soon as my milk came in and it squirts everywhere and it's just a ton
MARIE BISHOP: With my first he actually dealt with it really well considering that he was six weeks
preemie I was kind of shocked by that whereas my full term baby she has a lot of clicking and coughing and every once in a while a little bit of choking and we mainly deal with it, just we do a lot of side lane
nursing which is besides that I get to lay down but it is what it is I feel like I can't really control it's when the letdown comes and the other side I have to push my hand really hard on the other side or I'll end up soaking myself because both sides are really strong
It's a learning curve for both you and baby so we encourage you to remain positive whilst you overcome any
nursing difficulties - especially whilst your
preemie baby builds up strength to suck and feed confidently.

Pumping breast milk for a
preemie accomplishes two things: First, premature babies often have difficulty breastfeeding at first and with expressed milk, they can still receive the benefits of breast milk without having to
nurse.
It's important to ask doctors and
nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit about your
preemie's condition and care.

I had to work with a
preemie who was only bottle fed while in the NICU because this NICU was behind the times for a healthy
preemie that is progressing well he should have been offered to
nurse on his first feed or at least he should have been given his mothers Breast milk.
If one of the babies is a
preemie and has an extended hospital stay,
nurse the other from one side and pump the other breast to help both breasts learn to produce enough milk for two (or more).
Just as you had help 24 - hours a day in the NICU, you may initially arrange for family, friends, and home
nurses to assist you in caring for your

preemie nipple (usually one that is smaller and firmer with a slow flow rate, or one that is angled and flat) on a bottle, or a silicone shield over the breast nipple when

I was actually advised to stop
nursing and switch to
preemie formula believe it or not (needless to say I ignored that!)
Slow milk flow might make your baby sleepy because he needs to work so hard to
nurse, while a faster milk flow might help your
preemie stay awake, according to information provided by the International Breastfeeding Centre.
