An international team of scientists recently discovered that seeds of a tropical tree species, which regularly hosts bats in large hollows, contain
nutrients from bat excreta.
To test if the trees profit from the presence of bats by incorporating
nutrients from bat excreta into their seeds, the researchers analysed a specific form of nitrogen, the stable isotope 15N.

When doing so they said that they had two different kinds, one
from Mexican
bats (which had a higher nitrogen content), and the other domestic
bat guano, which has a
nutrient ratio of 3 -8-1.
She isn't sure why the
bats» teeth don't rot, but she thinks the acidity of their saliva may help
bats extract all the
nutrients they can
from their food.
